The goal of this workshop is to provide a broad overview of the effectiveness of the primary pipeline integrity assessment methods: in-line inspection, hydrostatic testing, and direct assessment. We end with a discussion of pipeline repairs and establishing reassessment intervals, providing a look at the full cycle of the integrity management process.

The first day lays the groundwork for later discussions and focuses on:

  • Pipeline defects (manufacturing, transportation, construction, and operating related defects)
  • Defect assessment methods
    • ASME B31G, Modified B31G, and Effective Area for blunt defects
    • Ln-Secant equation for planar defects and cracks
    • Pipe properties (strength and toughness and implications for fracture initiation and propagation)

We will also work through a hands-on group exercise to assess simulated corrosion flaws.

The second day focuses on the integrity assessment methods and their advantages and disadvantages. Hydrostatic testing is the oldest and most established on the assessment methods and is well understood. In-line inspection is a newer technology and one that is rapidly evolving. We will discuss the various methods for pipeline repair and limitations noted in liquid and gas safety codes and end with a discussion about establishing reassessment intervals.

The third day is dedicated to demonstrations in the laboratory.
